Care & Maintenance

Hardwood Floors impart richness, warmth and natural beauty to the décor. It is a permanent floor extremely durable and long lasting. The key to success of a hardwood floor lies in pre- installation job conditions and a little care with which one can enhance the value of one’s home and office over a period of time.

These floors are definitely elegant and one’s lifetime investment and would continue earning appreciation only if one is cautious and is aware of installation and maintenance techniques of such floors.

 WORK CONDITIONS

Sub-floor requirements: The sub-floor on which a wood is laid should be leveled, dry, damp-proof, smooth cement floor. We also encourage the civil contractors at site to lay this kind of surface by making grids separated by glass strips to prevent cracking of the surface with expansion and contraction of the slab and also to achieve permissible sub-floor level (Refer to installer recommendations). The sub-floor should also be treated against termites by the civil contractor in-charge.

Site requirements: The premises should be completely closed in, with outside windows and doors in place. All WET TRADES (drywall, paint, ceramic tile, bathroom works, etc.) should have completed. Air conditioning systems should be operational in accordance with “NORMAL LIVING CONDITIONS.” The wood floor should then acclimate to prevailing conditions for 3-5 days before installation.

INSTALLATION EXPECTATIONS

During and after laying of wood floor no one will be permitted to walk on it for at least 24-48 hours depending on weather conditions.

Sanding is generally undertaken 2-3 days after laying to allow the floor tiles or boards to settle down completely after drying.

Depending on what type of finish is done one should allow curing of the same for atleast 2 days even though the coating is tack dry after couple of hours.

PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE OF HARDWOOD FLOORS

Place floor mats: Dirt, grit and sand are your hardwood floors worst enemies. They act like abrasives on the finish causing wearing off of polish, scratches and dulling. Place floor-mats at entrances to trap dirt and prevent damage.

Keep water off the wooden surface: Standing water for longer periods can warp a poorly finished hardwood floor and can damage the finish. Simply wipe all spills as they happen.

Hard Cleaners: Avoid using hard cleaners. Always use neutral cleaners (refer to installers recommendations) made specifically for wood floors.

Furniture: Lift the furniture to move it----- avoid dragging. No matter how hard the finish is, No wood floor is scratch-proof, they are only scratch resistant.

Sun: Direct sun can discolor your hardwood floor. Draw curtains or blinds to the extent that the wood floor is not directly exposed to sun’s intense UV rays.

REGULAR MAINTENANCE

Vacuum: On regular basis vacuum a wood floor to remove dust and grit to avoid abrasion while walking.

Dust Mop: Use good dust mop-----one with a 12 to 18 inches cotton head to remove greasy dirt which cannot be removed with vacuum or sweeping to restore its original gleam

Wax regularly: Use wax (recommended by the installer) on the wood floor from time to time depending on usage.

DO NOT WET MOP EXCEPT WHEN SPILLAGE OCCURS.

REFURBISHING HARDWOOD FLOOR

After couple of years of usage of hardwood floor one can re-grind with special drum sanders and re-finish the surface to remove all scratches and un-removed dirt and restore its original gleam.(Refer to installers recommendations)
